TEACHERS' BIOGRAPHY

CRISTINA BAGGIO, (Singing) She graduated from the University of Psychopedagogy with top marks and honours and obtained a diploma in singing and vocal chamber music with top marks. She then went on to obtain a diploma of Biennium of High Training in Singing at the Vecchi Tonelli Institute in Modena and a diploma of Biennium of High Training in Vocal Chamber Music at the Conservatory of Vicenza, with 110/110 cum laude. She attended M° L.Magiera's International Academy of Perfectioning and perfected her studies in Italy with R.Scotto, L.Cuberli, in Salzburg at the Mozarteum International Summer Academy and in New York with Ruth Falcon. In 2004, she was admitted to the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, one of the most prestigious vocal academies in the world, in the class of Maestro B. Schumann. A musical and dramatic talent with a very versatile voice and a great stage temperament, she is one of the few Italian interpreters of Richard Strauss' Salome, which made its Italian debut in Manfred Schweigkofler's production, awarded by the German critics Operwelt as the best Italian production in 2012. First place winner of the international competitions Aslico, Toti Dal Monte, Iris Adami Corradetti, Mario Del Monaco, and finalist of the Vinjas in Barcelona, she distinguished herself in 2010 at the Armel Opera Word Competition by receiving the absolute prize as "Best Female Perfomer" for her interpretation of Renata in Prokofiev's L'Ange de Feu. She has debuted a varied repertoire of operatic roles and has alternated between almost all Mozart roles and countless roles from the 18th century. Her vocality has followed a path of continual progression that has led her in recent years to try her hand at even more demanding roles such as Manon Lescaut and Fedora, and to touch on the modern and contemporary music of Strauss, Prokofiev, Rota, Menotti and Zemlinsky. In the field of sacred, chamber and baroque music, he has collaborated with numerous international institutions and orchestras. She has received awards in prestigious International Competitions and has been invited to perform in numerous theatres and festivals both in Italy (Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Opera Nazionale in Rome, Regio in Parma, San Carlo in Naples, Filarmonico in Verona, Teatro alla Scala in Milan) and abroad (USA, UAE, Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Malta, Spain, Belgium, South America, Russia). He has collaborated with important conductors, including Gelmetti, Dantone, Y.Abel, J.Tate, G.Neuhold, A.Sanguineti, and directors such as D.Abbado, S.Purcărete, J.L.Martinoty, T.Reinhard, M.Placido and G.Proietti.

Course objectives: The masterclass aims to deepen the relationship between speech and singing, also highlighting reciprocal influences and performance problems, in relation to the specific characteristics of a vocal piece consisting of an aria with recitative from various historical periods chosen by the participants. The masterclass will highlight the need to make the eloquence intelligible and expressive in relation to the different techniques of vocal expression, deepening recitative, agility and legato singing. The relationships between speech and the dynamic, agogic and expressive signs used in musical language will be explored, trying to relate them to the meaning of the text, also from a dramaturgical point of view. The basic technique of singing will also be addressed (suggestions for understanding the body as a musical instrument).
