MASTERCLASSES 2023

The masterclasses will take place from July 15th to August 8th, 2023 in Sacile with a masterclass at the end of August.

FRANCESCA SCAINI, (Singing) After graduating from classical high school, she enrolled at the Conservatorio "B.Marcello" in Venice, graduating with top marks, receiving the silver medal of the President of the Republic as best student. She specialized at the Accademia della Voce in Turin, attending master classes with V.Zeani, F.Corelli, A.Krauss, R.Kabaiwanska; she also attended the Renata Scotto Opera Academy. In 1999 she was chosen by the famous mezzo-soprano Brigitte Fasbaender as Desdemona in Verdi's "Otello". In 2000 she again sang Desdemona in Montepellier, directed by Del Monaco. In 2001 she won the "Maria Callas, New Voices for Verdi" prize in the soprano category. For five years she was Prima Donna at the Hannover Staatsoper, debuting in the roles of Aida, Donna Anna, Fiordiligi, Amelia (Ballo in Maschera), Leonora (Trovatore), Jenufa, Adriana Lecouvreur, Tosca. Other roles in the repertoire: Anna Bolena, Elisabetta from Don Carlo, Butterfly, La Gioconda Elvira (Ernani). She has performed in major theatres and concert halls in Europe and beyond, including the Paris Opera, La Fenice in Venice, in Mexico City at the Teatro Bellas Artes and with the Mexican Philharmonic Orchestra. Worthy of mention is the "Tosca" staged in the 2009-10 season in Trento, Pisa and Rovigo: a passionate and courageous performance as Floria with the dynamic direction of D.Gentili and the conducting of V.Galli, as well as a production of "Attila" by G.Verdi in the places of the libretto, in front of the churchyard of the Basilica of Aquileia. He carried out intense concert activity, especially singing Verdi's "Messa da Requiem" around the world, to name but a few occasions: Odensee (Denmark), Brno, Kiev. She has also always been active in the field of contemporary music: for the Teatro La Fenice in the Sonopolis cycle as the protagonist in the opera jO pal by Hans Jochenn Hespos, which won the prize for best contemporary German production in 2005, directed by A.Viebrock, conductor J.Harneit. Her contact with great directors on the international scene (Ally, Del Monaco, Bieto, Decker, Viebrock, De Monticelli) have stimulated her particular interest in the sound-movement relationship both as a performer and as a teacher: she has been invited to give lectures at the Faculty of Singing at the University of Mexico City, and she is a passionate teacher and she regularly holds singing and performing arts master classes.

Course objectives: The masterclass aims to deepen the relationship between speech and singing, also highlighting reciprocal influences and performance problems, in relation to the specific characteristics of a vocal piece consisting of an aria with recitative from various historical periods chosen by the participants. The masterclass will highlight the need to make the eloquence intelligible and expressive in relation to the different techniques of vocal expression, deepening recitative, agility and legato singing. The relationships between speech and the dynamic, agogic and expressive signs used in musical language will be explored, trying to relate them to the meaning of the text, also from a dramaturgical point of view. The basic technique of singing will also be addressed (suggestions for understanding the body as a musical instrument).

SELENA COLOMBERA, (Vocal chamber music) She graduated from the Conservatorio "B.Marcello" in Venice, and perfected her studies in Vocal Chamber Music, 2nd level academic diploma with honours, at the Conservatorio "A.Pedrollo" in Vicenza, and obtained a two-year master's degree in "Italian vocal chamber repertoire between the 19th and 20th centuries" at the Conservatorio "G.Verdi" in Milan. In 2017 he joined the first Accademia Verdiana at the Regio Teatro di Parma and worked with great artists such as: Giovanna Casolla, Renato Bruson, Fiorenza Cedolins, Cecilia Gasdia, Barbara Frittoli and William Matteuzzi. She has won numerous prizes in prestigious national and international competitions. An eclectic performer, she is very active in the field of contemporary operas for children. She has performed important roles in operas and performances in prestigious international festivals and theatres, directed by, among others, F.Bellotto, M.Dini Ciacci, F.Bellotto, D.Carissoni, V.Lopane, M.Schipilliti and R.Cipriano, A.Betto, S.Gasparella, M.Arnaud, E.De Nadai and S.L.Amisich. Not bound to a single genre, she has performed Italian, European and world lieder repertoire for chamber and orchestral ensembles, also dedicating herself to the sacred repertoire with the performance of W.A.Mozart's motet "Exultate jubilate" and F.Mendelssohn's "Salve Regina". Interested in experimentation and modern and contemporary music, she performed music by contemporary composers M.Lenzi, E.Marcuzzo, G.Sparano, A.Zambon. In particular, in 2014 she premiered "Lapides II" by N.Evangelisti, while in 2016 she performed at the Museo del Novecento in Milan, performing "Cantus Planus" by N.Castiglioni, conducted by G.Galibariggi, and in 2017, conducted by M° M.Bonifacio, she performed "A 'nsunnari" by A.Corghi at the "G.Verdi" Conservatory in Milan. The songs "E allora il mio cuore voleva sentire" by A.Zambon, "XXIII canto" by F.Zorzini, "Desiderio di Afrodite" by C.Pasquotti (a work performed at the Greek Amphitheatre in Ischia) and "Three Poems by Emily Dickinson" by E.Marcuzzo were dedicated to the texture of her voice. He has sung with the choir of the Conservatory of Venice in "Traviata" (Teatro Comunale di Treviso, Teatro di Rovigo and Teatro di Ferrara) and is a member of the Accademia del Teatro La Scala Choir in Milan. He currently works with the chorus of the Zurich Opernhaus.

Course objectives: The masterclass aims to deepen the chamber vocal repertoire in Italian, German and French. It foresees the analysis of the text, the historical and analytical framework of the pieces presented, the perfecting of interpretative skills and performance techniques and offers the possibility of creating new formations and artistic collaborations.

ANASTASIA GOLDBERG, (Piano) She received her first piano lessons at the age of 5 from Irina Renova. Three years later she made her successful debut with Haydn's Piano Concerto in D with the Chamber Orchestra of the Special School of Music (Ekaterinburg). She graduated from the Ural State Conservatorium in Ekaterinburg and received her Master's degree from Naum Grubert at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague (NL). In 2000, she won the International Piano Competition in San Sebastian, Spain, where she gave solo recitals and was invited to serve on the jury of the same competition in 2009. She has performed with famous conductors such as Mikhail Jurowski, Stefan Vladar, Michel Tabachnik, Anton Grishanin and many others. He contributed to the world premiere of M. Tabachnik's Piano Concerto in F (2007) and the world premiere of Beethoven's Piano Concerto in F (Beethoven Festival 2010). He has made several recordings and the last one, self-published (Goldberg Productions) with works by Mozart and Beethoven, was highly praised by the press (best classical CD of 2010, together with the CDs of the Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Bayerische Rundfunk Orchestra) and by the Belgian radio station KLARA as 'CD of the day' (September 2010). She teaches piano at the Prince Claus Conservatory in Groningen (NL). She frequently performs in various venues in the Netherlands, France, Germany and Russia. Every year she is invited to various festivals in France, Russia and the Netherlands as performer, jury member and piano teacher.

Seminar objectives: Students from conservatories and music institutes of different levels, graduates or undergraduates who aim to deepen their knowledge and possibly prepare to continue their post-diploma studies are invited. The students will be able to deepen their study of solo and chamber compositions and confront problems of interpretation. The seminar also aims to deepen their technical-expressive knowledge of the instrument.

FRANCO MEZZENA, (Violin) Born in Trento, he studied with Salvatore Accardo. His activity as a soloist and in various chamber ensembles sees him perform in the most important theatres and as a guest at major festivals throughout Europe, Japan, Africa, the United States, Central and South America. He recently achieved a resounding success at New York's Carnegie Hall performing Mendelssohn's Concerto Opus 64. He has played with famous artists including Salvatore Accardo, Bruno Canino, Rocco Filippini, Alain Meunier, Bruno Mezzena, Antony Pay, Franco Petracchi, Ruggiero Ricci, Giovanni Sollima, etc. He is known worldwide for many CDs (more than 90). He recorded the world premiere of the complete 29 Concertos for violin and orchestra by G.B.Viotti and numerous unpublished Paganini Concertos for the Dynamic label. He recorded for Wide Classique, the complete Beethoven piano and violin compositions with Stefano Giavazzi. He founded the Piano Trio Mezzena-Patria-Ballario. He holds numerous master classes in Italy and abroad (Royal College and Trinity College in London, Hertford College in Oxford, Hochschule in Leipzig and Cologne, Tokyo, Osaka, Mexico City, etc.). He is also active as a conductor (Symphony Orchestra of Ljubljana, Symphony Orchestra of Jalisco, Orchestra del Teatro Regio di Torino, Symphony Orchestra of Pescara, Orchestra da Camera Milano Classica etc.). He plays on an Antonio Stradivari violin from 1695 and on instruments made by luthiers Giovanni Osvaldo Fiori and Roberto Regazzi. He won the Premio Napoli Cultural Classic (15th edition) for Excellence 2015, for the Music section. He is Artistic Director of the Lecce and Salento Chamber Orchestra. In 2018, he formed the crossover group 'Metamorphosis' with various artists. He regularly records for Brillant Classics, Odradek Records, Luna Rossa Classic and Dynamic. He holds an Annual Advanced Course in Violin and Chamber Music at the Accademia Ariadimusica in Rome, of which he is Vice-President.

Course objectives: Students from conservatories and music institutes of different levels, already formed chamber music groups, diploma holders or graduates aiming to deepen their knowledge are invited. Students will be able to deepen their study of solo and chamber compositions, as well as work on orchestral passages specific to their instrument. Analyses, ways of studying and learning the violin repertoire will also be explored.

ULRIKE HOFMANN, (Cello) She completed his musical training at the Berlin School of Music with Prof. Markus Nyikos, obtaining a solo diploma with distinction. As a member of the Karajan Academy, she began working with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Winner of the 'Deutsche Musikwettbeverb' competition, she was selected to participate in the 'Konzerte Junger Künstler', thanks to which she began her solo career. Subsequently, she was awarded prizes at competitions: Marktneukirchen International, 'Domenico Gabrielli' in Berlin and 'Domnick Violoncello Preis' in Stuttgart. She is currently a member of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra and regularly collaborates with the 'Chamber Orchester of Europe' and the Ensemble Oriol in Berlin. Since 2000, he has been a member of the Berlin Quartet 'Le Musiche', with which he performs intensively in concerts, radio productions, recordings and master classes. As a soloist and chamber musician he gives concerts in Europe, Japan, the USA, the Middle East and participates in important music festivals such as the Rheingau Festival, the Mitteleuropa Festival and the Salzburg Easter Festival. As part of the courses at the Carl-Flesch Akademie in Baden-Baden, she was awarded the Lions-preis, thanks to which she recorded her first CD for Cello and Orchestra with music by Dvorak and Bruch.

Students will be able to study solo and chamber music compositions, deepening their technical-expressive knowledge of the instrument. Analysis, study methods and learning of the cello repertoire will also be explored.

MATTEO RONCHINI, (Cello) He studied at the Conservatorio "G.Verdi" in Milan, his hometown, with Maestros Bruno Vitali and Rocco Filippini, graduating with top marks. He specialised with the Russian cellist David Geringas and at the "W.Stauffer" String Academy in Cremona with Maestros Rocco Filippini and Bruno Giuranna. With the "W.Stauffer" String Quartet, he performed in the most important Italian concert centres, including the Teatro Sistina in Rome, the Teatro Morlacchi in Perugia, La Pergola in Florence, the Cremona International Festival, the International Weeks in Naples, and was the first Italian guest quartet in China, performing concerts in Beijing, Shanghai, radio recordings and holding master classes at the Shanghai Conservatory. He attended master classes with the Trio di Trieste at the Scuola Internazionale di Duino and at the Accademia Chigiana di Siena, obtaining a diploma of merit for both. With the Quartetto Ronchini he has performed in numerous concerts in Italy and abroad (Amsterdam, Kiev, Lugano, Milan, Turin, Trieste, Gorizia, Modena, Asolo). Solo concerts with the Angelicum Orchestra, I Pomeriggi Musicali conducted by Daniele Gatti and the United Europe Chamber Orchestra (UECO) in Milan, the Fiesole Chamber Orchestra with Felix Ayo, the "N.Paganini" of the Genoa Conservatory conducted by Piero Bellugi and Karl Martin playing the Double Concerto by J.Brahms and the Triple Concerto by L.van Beethoven with violinist Mario Trabucco and pianist Massimiliano Damerini, the Orchestra da Camera Italiana with Salvatore Accardo. He has collaborated as First Cello with the String Orchestra "I Virtuosi italiani", with "I Solisti di Parma", with the UECO of Milan. Invited by Maestro Salvatore Accardo to play the role of First Cello since the birth of the Orchestra da Camera Italiana, he has toured extensively in Italy and abroad, recording for Fonit Cetra, playing at the Senate of the Republic for the 50th anniversary of the Italian Constitution broadcast by RAI and in the following years. With Maestro Salvatore Accardo he performed in a video concert at the Royal Palace in Madrid playing Quartets by L. Boccherini with the precious 1696 Antonio Stradivari cello belonging to the Museum. Winner of professorship competitions, he teaches cello at the Conservatorio "G.Verdi" in Milan. Invited to participate in the International Festival of Conservatories, he has given concerts and master classes in Split, Munich, St. Petersburg. In 2004 for Genoa Capital of European Culture he performed with the Paganini Ensemble in prestigious venues such as the Auditorium "N.Paganini" in Parma, the Cervo Festival, the Camogli Festival, the "Paganiniana" at the Modena Theatre in Genoa. With violinist Mario Trabucco, curator of the Guarneri del Gesù violin known as "il Cannone", he played Paganini repertoire at Palazzo Tursi in Genoa. For the Camogli Festival, he performed the complete Sonatas and Variations by L. van Beethoven for cello and piano with pianist Pinuccia Schicchi. Since 2005, he has been the cellist of the Trio Trabucco. For the Arezzo Festival, he held a recital with actress Lucilla Morlacchi. For the FAI at Villa Balbianello on Lake Como, he performed the three Suites for cello solo by B.Britten. At the invitation of the Art Music Festival in Lecco, he performed, in the prestigious Villa Monastero in Varenna, the Complete Suites of J.S.Bach for solo cello. In Moneglia, he holds a master class for cello. His cello is a Celeste Farotti (Milan, 1913).

STEFANO BET, (Historical and modern flute) Originally from Friuli Venezia Giulia, he is one of the most innovative Italian flutists of his generation. A Baroque, classical, Renaissance transverse flute and recorder player, he perfected his skills with the best specialists in the field, including the Kujiken brothers and Harnoncourt, in Padua, Rome, Antwerpen, Basel and Salzburg. In line with the tradition of musicians who moved from Friuli to Venice between the Renaissance and Baroque periods, Stefano made his debut in 1983 at the Festival Vivaldi Venezia. He then took part as a soloist, chamber musician and in orchestra in many international festivals and reviews such as the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Accademia Chigiana in Siena, Festival del Lingotto in Turin, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Teatro RTSI in Lugano, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Bologna Festival, Mozarteum in Salzburg, Musikverein Wien, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, Royal Opera of Versailles, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Barcelona Palau de la Música, Musikfestspiele Potsdam, then Europe, America and Asia. He has collaborated with Diego Fasolis & I Barocchisti & Coro della Radio Svizzera, I Sonatori de la Giocosa Marca, Alain Curtis, Cecilia Bartoli, Accademia Strumentale Italiana, Gustav Leonhardt, Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala, Accademia Bizantina, Dario Luisi & Susanne Scholz & Cappella Musicae Graz, Streicherakademie Bozen, Concerto Palatino, Max Emanuel Cencic, Collegium Cartusianum Köln, Philippe Jaroussky, Giuliano Carmignola, Andrea Marcon, Concerto Armonico Budapest, Sergio Azzolini and many others. An expert in the ancient chamber and orchestral repertoire (from Monteverdi to Mozart), even his solo recital 'Del sonar con ogni sorte de flauti' was well received by the public and critics. Stefano has made radio and television recordings for various national broadcasting stations, CDs and videos for Tactus, Stradivarius, Amadeus, Centaur, Cpo, Arts, Chandos, Emi, Decca, Virgin, Erato, Sony, also gaining recognition from specialist critics. A passionate teacher, active in musicological and organological research and violin making, he has held courses and masterclasses in Italy and abroad for musicians from many countries around the world.

Seminar objectives: The seminar is open to all flutists on the modern instrument, transverse flute and recorder who wish to explore the Baroque and Renaissance repertoire from Bach Sonatas to Venetian Sonatas. Students from conservatories and music institutes of different levels, graduates or undergraduates who wish to deepen their knowledge are invited, and, depending on the number of participants, other instruments and/or already organised groups are also welcome. SERGIO LAZZERI, (Contrabassoon) After graduating in bassoon with top marks in 1982 at the Conservatorio "Niccolò Paganini" in Genoa, he began a long-term collaboration with various chamber groups and symphony orchestras. In 1983 he won the Concorso internazionale Città di Stresa and in the same year he won the Rassegna "C.M.Rietmann" in Genoa and the audition for the orchestra of the Laboratorio Lirico Sperimentale in Alessandria. In 1984 he was a finalist at the International Festival of Instrumental Duo in Forte dei Marmi and in 1985 he won, in duo with pianist Giovanni Maria Lori, the absolute first prize in the wind and piano category. In 1984 he won the competition for the position of bassoon co-soloist at the Teatro del Giglio in Lucca, in whose orchestra he worked until 1987. In 1987 he collaborated with the Teatro La Fenice in Venice as contrabassoonist and in the same year he took part in the Schleswig Holstein Festival under the direction of Sergiu Celibidache (concerts in Paris, Milan, Hamburg, Berlin, Basel). In 1988, he won competitions in France for the Orchestre Orchestre Symphonique d'Europe and Orchestre de l'Offrande Musicale. In 1989 he won competitions in Spain for first bassoon and contrabassoon at the Orquesta Filarmonica de Gran Canaria, where he worked until 1992. In 1991 he won the competition for Conservatory teachers in Italy. In 1992 he won the competition for first bassoon at the Orchestre National de Lyon (France) and in 1993 he won the competition for first bassoon at the Israel Chamber Orchestra (Israel). From 1994 to 2000 he was first bassoon in the Cyprus State Orchestra (Cyprus). He has collaborated as soloist with the Orchestra del Teatro del Giglio in Lucca, the Orquesta Filarmonica de Gran Canaria, the Cyprus State Orchestra, the Filarmonia Skopjie, the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana. He regularly collaborates as contrabassoonist with the Orchestra Filarmonica Marchigiana, the Orchestra "Haydn of Trento and Bolzano, the Orchestra Nazionale della RAI di Torino and I Fiati di Parma. A former bassoon teacher at the "Licinio Refice" Conservatory in Frosinone and the "Luigi Cherubini" Conservatory in Florence, he currently teaches at the "Giuseppe Tartini" Conservatory in Trieste.

Course objectives: Students from conservatories and music institutes of different levels, graduates or undergraduates are invited to deepen their knowledge by studying chamber solo compositions and orchestral passages specific to their instrument, confronting the problems of interpretation and preservation of the style of musical epochs, leaning on the search for the appropriate technical means to express themselves at their best.

HANS VAN DER ZANDEN, (Horn) While still a student at the conservatories of Maastricht and Tilburg (NL) Mr. van der Zanden received his first invitation from Maestro Jac van Steen to play as principal horn in the Neues Berliner Kammerorchester. Soon after he was appointed principal horn in The North Netherlands Orchestra in Groningen, NL. Currently, Mr. van der Zanden is principal horn of Brussels Philharmonic. As an invited guest with some of the world’s top orchestra’s & ensembles, like The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Essener Philharmoniker, Metalakan Brass Toulouse a.o. Hans has travelled extensively throughout his career, not only within Europe, but also Asia, Russia and both North & South America. Mr. van der Zanden can be heard on a multitude of television and film soundtracks. His extensive catalogue includes films scored by Alan Silvestri, Elliot Goldenthal and the Oscar winning film, “The Artist” by Ludovic Bource. Mr. van der Zanden gives regular master classes in Chiaramonte Gulfi (Sicily), Horn Festival Fagagna (It). Since September 2018, Mr. van der Zanden is professor of horn at Fontys Conservatory, Academy of Music and Performing Arts, Tilburg (NL).

Seminar objectives: The seminar focuses on the study of solo, chamber and orchestral repertoire. Both technical and expressive-stylistic pieces will be covered. It is aimed at young musicians. Students from conservatories and music institutes of different levels, graduates or undergraduates who wish to deepen their knowledge and possibly prepare themselves for further postgraduate studies are invited.

GIANNINO FASSETTA, (Accordion) He began studying the accordion at the age of six with Maestro Elio Boschello of Venice, who emphasised that even at a very young age he stood out for his technical spontaneity, ease of interpretation and fervent musicality. He followed specialization courses with Maestros F.Lips and W.Zubintskj. He was awarded first place in fifteen national and international competitions, and participates in recordings for Rai TV, regional and foreign networks. He carries out intense concert activity in Italy and abroad (Argentina, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Pakistan, Portugal, Czech Republic, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland). Particularly important for his artistic consecration is the tour in Argentina, where he also performed at the Teatro Colòn in Buenos Aires in the presence of Laura Escalada Piazzolla, who placed him among the best interpreters of Astor Piazzolla, agreeing with the critics. Thanks to his acknowledged interpretative versatility, Gianni Fassetta collaborates permanently with internationally renowned artists in various formations: from Kaleiduo to Remo Anzovino Trio, with whom he gives a hundred applauded international concerts of great live impact. With the concert on 31 July 2009 in Forte dei Marmi, he began participating in Maestro Nicola Piovani's musical projects, Oscar winner for the soundtrack of Roberto Benigni's 'La vita e bella'. In 2000, he published the CD "Evocazioni" with his own music on texts by the poet Giuseppe Malattia della Vallata (International Literary Prize) and in 2002 the CD "Reflejo", a monographic work on Astor Piazzolla's production. He also brings his instrumental contribution to several productions by prestigious contemporary composers.  In 2000, for the soundtrack of the film 'Vajont' by Renzo Martinelli, he composed two pieces for accordion and string quartet, now published by the Sugar Music record company in Milan. Since 2011 he has also been working as artistic director of the Fadiesis Accordion Festival.

Course objectives: Students from conservatories and music institutes of different levels, who aim to deepen their knowledge by studying solo and chamber compositions, are invited, as well as amateurs with no immediate scholastic goals or graduates with advanced training goals. Analyses, ways of studying and learning the accordion repertoire will also be explored.
